Moving checklist
Everything to sort out before the van turns up, week by week.
Eight weeks to go
- Get a free quote and pencil in the date
- Decide what is coming, what goes to charity and what is for the tip
- Check your notice period if you rent
- Start a moving folder for quotes and reference numbers
Four weeks to go
- Confirm the date and tell us about stairs, lifts and parking
- Order boxes or a box kit
- Pack the rooms you hardly use
- Book time off for the day
Two weeks to go
- Tell the council, GP, bank, employer, DVLA and insurers
- Set up Royal Mail redirection
- Arrange gas, electricity, water and broadband at both ends
- Book a parking suspension if you need one
The week before
- Pack everything except the essentials
- Label every box with its room
- Take apart what you are dismantling and bag the screws
- Confirm times and addresses with us
The day before
- Defrost the freezer
- Drain the washing machine
- Charge your phone
- Pack your first-night box
Moving day
- Take meter readings
- Show the crew round
- Keep a clear path to the van
- Do a last walk round every room
